2 Women in Queens and Many Others Find a Sick Day Could Mean They’re Fired
The NY Times wrote a piece about two food workers who lost their jobs because they got sick. Not only did they not get sick days off, they were terminated for not coming into their FOOD SERVICE JOB while ill.
More than half of all food service workers report that they’ve come to work sick because they couldn’t afford to take a day off. 20% of food-borne illnesses can be traced back to a sick employee.
The federal minimum wage for a food service worker is $7.25 (if you’re working, you make $2.13 an hour and it’s expected that tips will make up the rest). So if an employee called in sick for an 8-hour shift, their employer would pay $58 (minus taxes). But because they’re too cheap to cough up fifty-eight whole dollars, restaurants put YOU at risk to be that 1 in 6 Americans who gets sick from food every year. But hey, it’s not like the top chain restaurants are making millions of dollars in sales per restaurant or - oh.
Reminder: The US is LITERALLY the only nation in the world that does not have legally mandated leave of any sort.
“Greatest nation in the world” my ass, the US is a third-world shithole.
